The Tour of the Alps sees Emil Herzog and Cesare Benedetti, the youngest and oldest BORA - hansgrohe athletes, line up together. We spoke with both before the start of today’s stage.When Cesare Benedetti competed in his first Tour of the Alps, Emil Herzog was just attending kindergarten. Back in 2010, the stage race through the Alps was still called the Giro del Trentino and primarily took place in Northern Italy. Benedetti and the predecessor to the BORA - hansgrohe team, NetApp, were in their first season in the professional peloton. “I remember the race well. It was one of the highlights of our racing calendar. As a small Continental team, we were the underdogs in the line-up,” Cesare recalls.<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Cesare Benedetti: The experienced one&nbsp;</h3>What followed was a story of success: rising through the ranks with NetApp, then with BORA - Argon 18 (from 2015), and later BORA - hansgrohe (from 2017), he reached the WorldTour level. Among his notable accomplishments, “Cece”, as his teammates call him, won a stage at the Giro d’Italia in 2019. He also left a mark at the Giro del Trentino, the forerunner of the Tour of the Alps 2015, when he was part of the BORA - Argon 18 team that won the initial team time trial, and he held the overall leader’s jersey for a day. “That race was exceptionally special as it included a leg through my hometown,” Cesare remembers.In 2024, Cesare is set to participate in the Tour of the Alps for the seventh time. Now 36 years old, he is among the most experienced riders in the peloton. Interestingly, the race also features 19-year-old Emil Herzog, currently the youngest BORA - hansgrohe athlete. Cesare smiles: “I still feel quite young. But during a team training camp, I rode with Emil, and it hit me how quickly time has passed. He could almost be my son,” he laughs.<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Emil Herzog: The Youngster</h3>While Cesare approaches the Alps as an experienced mentor, Emil sees the race as an opportunity to learn. “I've just entered the WorldTour and have relatively little experience. That’s why it’s fantastic for me to be able to benefit from the knowledge of experienced pros like Cece,” says the German rider. “'It’s the little details – like how to position oneself in the peloton or how to manage energy across stages – these are aspects that operate very differently among the pros compared to the junior levels,” he continues.After a strong spring where he gathered his first experiences in the WorldTour peloton, Emil sees the Tour of the Alps as an opportunity for further development. “The Tour of the Alps is a tough race, with many climbs and technically challenging descents. It’s quite different from the spring classics,” he says. Cesare believes Emil is up to the challenge: “Emil is a great talent. He got off to a good start in the WorldTour. Wir sprachen mit beiden vor dem Start der heutigen Etappe.Als Cesare Benedetti seine erste Tour of the Alps bestritt, ging Emil Herzog noch in den Kindergarten. 2010 hieß das Etappenrennen durch die Alpen noch Giro del Trentino und führte vornehmlich durch Norditalien. Benedetti und das BORA - hansgrohe Vorgänger-Team NetApp absolvierten damals gerade ihre erste Saison im Profi-Peloton. „Ich erinnere mich noch gut an das Rennen. Für uns war es eines der Highlights im Rennkalender. Als kleines Continental-Teams waren wir die Underdogs im Starterfeld“, sagt Cesare, als wir mit ihm über das Rennen sprechen.<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Der Erfahrene im Team&nbsp;</h3>Was folgte, war eine Erfolgsgeschichte: Gemeinsam mit NetApp, später Bora - Argon 18 (ab 2015) und schließlich BORA - hansgrohe (ab 2017) stieg er in die WorldTour auf. Unter anderem gewann „Cece“, wie er im Team kurz genannt wird, 2019 eine Etappe beim Giro d'Italia. Auch beim Tour-of-the-Alps-Vorgänger Giro del Trentino hinterließ er seine Spuren: 2015 gewann er mit BORA - Argon 18 das Auftakt-Teamzeitfahren und trug anschließend einen Tag das Trikot des Gesamtführenden. „Das war ganz speziell, denn das Rennen führte unter anderem durch mein Heimatdorf“, erinnert sich Cesare.2024 steht Cesare bereits zum siebten Mal bei der Tour of the Alps am Start. Mit inzwischen 36 Jahren gehört er dabei zu den erfahrensten im Feld. Das Besondere: Mit dem 19-jährigen Emil Herzog ist auch der derzeit jüngste BORA - hansgrohe Profi bei der Tour of the Alps am Start. Cesare muss schmunzeln: „Ich fühle mich eigentlich noch recht jung. Aber während eines Team-Trainingslagers bin ich zusammen mit Emil gefahren und mir ist klar geworden, wie schnell die Zeit vergangen ist. Er könnte fast mein Sohn sein“, lacht er.<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Der Youngster im Team</h3>Während Cesare in den Alpen die Rolle des erfahrenen Mentors einnimmt, ist das Rennen für Emil eine Möglichkeit, viel zu lernen. „Ich bin frisch in die WorldTour gekommen und habe dementsprechend recht wenig Erfahrung. Für mich ist es daher genial, wenn ich vom Wissen erfahrener Profis wie Cece profitieren kann“, sagt der Deutsche. „Besonders die kleinen Details – etwa wie man sich im Peloton positioniert oder wie man die Energie über die Etappen hinweg managt – das sind Dinge, die bei den Profis ganz anders ablaufen als in den Nachwuchsklassen.“Nach einer starken Frühjahrssaison, bei der er seine ersten Erfahrungen im WorldTour-Peloton sammelte, sieht Emil die Tour of the Alps als eine Gelegenheit, sich weiterzuentwickeln. „Die Tour of the Alps ist ein hartes Rennen, mit vielen Anstiegen und technisch anspruchsvollen Abfahrten. Das ist noch einmal etwas ganz anderes als die Frühjahrsklassiker“, sagt er. Cesare ist sich sicher, dass Emil auch diese Challenge meistern wird: „Emil ist ein großes Talent. Er hatte einen guten Start in die WorldTour. The Itzulia Basque Country Tour, which was unfortunately overshadowed by severe crashes, concluded with its Queen Stage in Eibar. Following two crashes, the then-leader and winner of the opening time trial, Primož Roglič had to abandon the race. Fortunately, however, he escaped without any fractures. On the penultimate stage, it seemed that the tide was turning for the team from Raubling. Maximilian Schachmann demonstrated that he is regaining his old strength after battling through injuries and illness. Maximilian managed to stay in the leading group until about 30 km before the finish. However, as the race fragmented on the penultimate demanding Izua climb, he had to let his competitors go up the road. Ultimately, with Carlos Rodríguez claiming victory, Maximilian finished in 26th place. Our week started on a high note with a commendable team effort resulting in a win in the individual time trial with Primož. As the race progressed, our strategy focused on maintaining a safe position until the final stage. We successfully defended the yellow jersey across three stages. However, our fortunes took a turn for the worse when an unfortunate crash disrupted our plans. Stage 5 presented a daunting task as we had to swiftly regroup after the departure of Primož. Despite the setback, our team rallied admirably, securing a strong third place finish and only narrowly missing out on claiming the yellow jersey. Heading into the final stage, our objective was to defend our second position overall. Unfortunately, the challenging penultimate climb proved to be too tough, and we struggled to find our best legs. Nevertheless, the collective effort displayed by our team members was commendable, with each rider giving their best. Nach zwei Stürzen musste auch der zwischenzeitlich Gesamtführende und Sieger des Auftaktzeitfahrens, Primož Roglič, die Rundfahrt beenden. Glücklicherweise blieb der Slowene aber von Frakturen verschont. Auf der vorletzten Etappe schien sich das Blatt für das Team aus Raubling zu wenden. Maximilian Schachmann zeigte, dass er sich nach mehreren Verletzungen und Krankheiten auf dem Weg zur alten Stärke befindet. Mit einem Podestplatz auf der vorletzten Etappe und einem zweiten Rang in der Gesamtwertung ging der Deutsche auf die Schlussetappe. Das Finale um Eibar herum kündigte sich als entscheidend im Kampf um den Gesamtsieg an, da die ersten acht Fahrer nur durch 15 Sekunden getrennt waren. Maximilian konnte sich bis etwa 30 km vor dem Ziel in der Spitzengruppe halten. Als das Rennen jedoch im vorletzten schweren Izua-Anstieg auseinanderfiel, musste er seine Konkurrenten ziehen lassen. Beim Sieg von Carlos Rodríguez erreichte Maximilian letztlich das Ziel auf dem 26. Platz. Er belegte damit den 13. The 27-year-old has improved so much that he was able to leave the intensive care unit. A doctor from the medical team of BORA - hansgrohe saw him to obtain an impression of his condition on site. He is stable and has therefore already been transferred to the normal ward of the hospital on Tenerife. His injuries, particularly in the chest area (severe chest trauma with rib fractures and lung contusion), will continue to be treated there.&nbsp;Ralph Denk, Team Manager BORA - hansgrohe: “Lennard has taken a huge step forward. The fact that he can now be transferred to the normal ward is very good news. Eine Ärztin aus dem Betreuungsteam von BORA - hansgrohe konnte sich vor Ort einen Eindruck seines Zustands machen. Sein Zustand ist stabil und daher wurde er bereits auf die Normalstation des Krankenhauses auf Teneriffa verlegt. Dort werden seine Verletzungen, vor allem im Brustbereich (schweres Thoraxtrauma mit Rippen-Frakturen und Lungenprellung), weiter versorgt.&nbsp;Ralph Denk, Team Manager BORA - hansgrohe: “Lennard hat einen Riesenschritt gemacht. Dass er jetzt auf die Normalstation verlegt werden kann, ist eine sehr gute Nachricht. Ich möchte mich beim Ärzteteam auf Teneriffa und auch unserem Medical Department für ihren großen Einsatz in den letzten Tagen bedanken. Wir wünschen Lennard weiterhin viel Kraft für eine schnelle Genesung.”

Heinrich Haussler was a professional rider for 19 years, half his life. Born in Australia, he moved to Germany at the age of 14 to become a pro cyclist. He won stages at the Tour de France, the Vuelta and the Tour de Suisse. But his great love was the cobblestones in Belgium and France. He had to end his career in 2023 due to heart problems. Instead of spending his days on the saddle, he now sits behind the wheel of the race car as a Sports Director. Heinrich Haussler talks about his second career as a young Sports Director, his passion for the classics and why the races are tougher today than they were 15 years ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_03365_d257e865f2.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Heino, back in Belgium, back in the classics. How does that feel for you?&nbsp;Being back here feels like coming home. I love this atmosphere! It starts on the Opening Weekend and then the excitement builds and builds until the highlights. I love just about everything here - the races, the weather, the atmosphere, the recons, the tactical meetings. I'm really passionate about the classics, it's just my thing.&nbsp;&nbsp;You had to end your career last year after heart problems. How are you doing now?&nbsp;The first few years weren’t easy for me, after all, I had been a pro rider for almost half my life. Fortunately, I was already at the end of my career and wasn't entirely sure whether I would be able to continue for another year anyway. Continuing my career would have been far too much of a health risk. An inflammation of the heart muscle left a scar on my heart. Extreme cardiac arrhythmia was the result. Today I have a pacemaker and a defibrillator in my chest.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_03248_0ede11ca03.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;The classics and especially those in Flanders were your great love as a pro cyclist. Now you're back on the cobblestones as Sports Director. Was it a career aspiration that you already had as a pro?&nbsp;It was definitely my aspiration. I live for cycling, I've done nothing else my whole life. It was always clear to me that I wanted to pass on my experience after my professional career. In my last team as a professional, they wanted to sign me as a DS a few years ago. I always had to fight a bit to be able to do one more year as a rider. After all, I can still be a Sports Director for a long time, the years as a professional are limited.&nbsp;What was your favourite classic to ride as a pro?&nbsp;I really enjoyed riding Omloop het Nieuwsblad. The start of the classics season, road cycling in Belgium wakes up from hibernation and you are immediately gripped by the atmosphere.&nbsp;But of course I also rode the Tour of Flanders. A monument, the highlight for the Belgians, crowds along the route - goosebumps!&nbsp;But: my personal favourite is Paris-Roubaix. I still have a fire in me for this race. If someone would tell me today that I had the green light for Roubaix from a medical point of view - I would get on my bike immediately. A dream that will unfortunately remain only a dream.&nbsp;But the anticipation of my first Paris-Roubaix as Sports Director is also enormous. The days leading up to the race are like the days before Christmas for a litte kid.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_06939_6701b0f6c0.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;And now as Sports Director?I can't really answer that yet after my short time as DS. But I do have a preference for the classics. I know the races very well, so I can pass on a lot of knowledge to the riders. At what point in the race do you have to be in position, where do crashes almost always happen or on which climb can the decisive attack be made. I still think like a rider, I know what it feels like to ride into a cobbled section at 500 watts. That helps me a lot in my work here.&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_5222_2_7a6cd7be50.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;&nbsp;How have the classics changed in recent years?The races have changed dramatically. Every team has a real classics squad with extremely strong riders. The races are so brutally hard and demand everything from the pros. You have to be 100% focused for 6 hours. There used to be a sprint for position before the Kwaremont, but today the Tour of Flanders is a 270km long battle for position. There were maybe 10 specialists for these races. Today, every team has several classics riders who can also ride for victory.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2009 you were 2nd in the Tour of Flanders. Is the race being ridden differently today?&nbsp;The big guys ride incredible solos. In 2009 we crossed the finish line in Ninove with 30 men. Compared to today, the race course was easier than this year. Also, material, training, nutrition - a lot has changed since 2009. A rider like Mathieu van der Poel would probably have kicked our asses back then.&nbsp;&nbsp;You are a young DS and have ridden in the peloton with most of your riders. That can be helpful and challenging at the same time, can't it?&nbsp;I am perhaps still a young Sports Director. But the DSs in other teams are also getting younger. The sport has changed, the races are being ridden differently, the tactics have changed. A Sports Director who was a professional not so long ago can be very valuable. I know a lot of riders in the peloton and perhaps also know where their weaknesses lie. Modern cycling has only just spit me out of the whirlwind and even though I'm now behind the wheel, I know the dynamics within the peloton very well. The guys trust me and my experience. &nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_06934_d0ffa93700.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Emil Herzog is 19 and rode his first Tour of Flanders last weekend. You were a pro for 19 years and rode Flanders 15 times. What advice would you give a young pro like Emil in his first season?&nbsp;I turned pro at 20, and I can understand him very well on many levels. We really talk a lot before and after the races. He has a great engine and outstanding bike control - Emil has real talent for the classics. But he still has a lot to learn. Positioning, getting to know the sections of the course, seeing opportunities and then having the courage to take advantage of them. &nbsp;&nbsp;Your first Paris-Roubaix as a DS is coming up this weekend. A race with which you associate many memories and emotions. Are you excited? Looking forward to it?&nbsp;Roubaix is the crown of the classics season. The nervous first 90km, the battles for position before Arenberg, the pain in the hands - no other race is so hard on the body and mind, no other race gets so much adrenaline flowing. I think it will be very similar in the car behind the wheel.&nbsp;As a Sports Director, you experience the race with a similar emotional intensity. You can feel how the riders suffering, you feel the excitement and give everything on the radio to make sure they never give up.I enjoy this tense anticipation before Roubaix, I'm incredibly excited about the race!&nbsp;Roubaix is extremely tough for the riders. What are the challenges for a Sports Director?You have to be flexible at Paris-Roubaix. You don't just need a plan B. Even if plan C doesn't work out, you still need ideas on how to deal with that.&nbsp;So much can happen here; it's the only place where you can be hopelessly left behind and end up on the podium in Roubaix. Roubaix requires meticulous preparation. The organisation of the support staff on the course, strategies for catering and quick help in case of defects.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_06735_5d6d1fd252.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;The finish line in the Roubaix velodrome also marks the end of the cobbled classics. Did you used to be wistful that this special time of year is already over?&nbsp;Wistful is almost an understatement for me personally. When you live for the classics and put so much energy and passion into this time, there is a certain emptiness after Roubaix.&nbsp;As a rider, a new season would begin for me. A season in which I had to work for my captains in stage races and secretly only dream of the next classics season. Now, as Sports Director, I also feel this nostalgia and emptiness, but I'm also looking forward to the new challenges this summer. The classics were very easy for me as a DS, everything feels so natural. I know how to win races in Belgium. But I still have to learn how to lead a team to success in the Tour. The Giro will be an exciting time for me, I can learn a lot from my colleagues. The classics book with notes on route sections and tire pressure will stay in my pocket - you can never start preparing early enough.&nbsp;Last question: Leffe or Kwaremont?&nbsp;The atmosphere on the Kwaremont is unbeatable (smiles). 19 Jahre und damit sein halbes Leben war Heinrich Haussler Radprofi. In Australien geboren, mit 14 Jahren nach Deutschland gezogen - um Radprofi zu werden. Etappensieger bei der Tour de France, der Vuelta und der Tour de Suisse. Seine große Liebe aber galt dem Kopfsteinpflaster in Belgien und Frankreich.&nbsp;2023 musste er seine Karriere aufgrund von Herzproblemen beenden. Statt auf dem Sattel sitzt er jetzt als Sportlicher Leiter am Lenkrad des Renndienstwagens. Heinrich Haussler über seine zweite Karriere als junger Sportlicher Leiter, brennende Leidenschaft für die Klassiker und warum die Rennen heute härter sind als noch vor 15 Jahren.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_03365_d257e865f2.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Heino, zurück in Belgien, zurück bei den Klassikern. Wie fühlt sich das für dich an?&nbsp;Hier zurück zu sein, das fühlt sich an wie nach Hause kommen. Ich liebe diese Stimmung! Das fängt am Opening Weekend an und dann baut sich die Spannung bis zu den Höhepunkten immer weiter auf. Ich liebe so gut wie alles hier - die Rennen, das Wetter, die Atmosphäre, die Recons, die Taktik-Besprechungen. Ich brenne unheimlich für die Klassiker, das ist genau mein Ding.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nach Herzproblemen hast du deine Karriere im letzten Jahr beenden müssen. Wie geht es dir jetzt?&nbsp;Die erste Zeit war nicht einfach für mich, immerhin war ich fast mein halbes Leben Radprofi. Glücklicherweise war ich bereits am Ende meiner Karriere und ohnehin nicht ganz sicher, ob ich noch ein Jahr dran hängen würde.&nbsp;Die Karriere fortzusetzen hätte gesundheitlich ein viel zu hohes Risiko dargestellt. Eine Herzmuskelentzündung hat eine Narbe an meinem Herz hinterlassen. Extreme Herzrhythmusstörungen waren die Folge. Heute trage ich einen Herzschrittmacher und einen Defibrillator in der Brust, meine Lebensversicherung.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_03248_0ede11ca03.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Die Klassiker und speziell jene in Flandern waren deine große Liebe als Radprofi. Jetzt bist du als Sportlicher Leiter wieder auf dem Kopfsteinpflaster unterwegs. Ein Berufswunsch, den du bereits als Profi gehabt hast?&nbsp;Definitiv war es mein Berufswunsch. Ich lebe für den Radsport, habe mein ganzes Leben nichts anderes gemacht. Für mich war immer klar, dass ich nach der Profi-Karriere meine Erfahrung weitergeben möchte. In meinem letzten Team als Profi wollte man mich schon vor einigen Jahren als DS verpflichten. Ich musste immer etwas darum kämpfen, noch ein Jahr als Fahrer machen zu können. Sportlicher Leiter kann ich noch lange sein, die Jahre als Profi sind limitiert.&nbsp;&nbsp;Welchen Klassiker bist du als Profi eigentlich am liebsten gefahren?&nbsp;Omloop het Nieuwsblad bin ich sehr gerne gefahren. Der Auftakt der Klassiker-Saison, der Straßenradsport in Belgien erwacht aus dem Winterschlaf und sofort packt einen diese krasse Stimmung.&nbsp;Aber natürlich auch die Flandern-Rundfahrt. Ein Monument, das Highlight für die Belgier, Menschenmassen an der Strecke - Gänsehaut!&nbsp;Aber: mein persönlicher Favorit ist Paris-Roubaix. Für dieses Rennen habe ich noch immer ein Feuer in mir. Würde heute jemand zu mir sagen, dass ich aus medizinischer Sicht wieder grünes Licht für Roubaix hätte - ich würde sofort auf das Rad steigen. Ein Traum, der leider auch ein Traum bleiben wird.&nbsp;Aber auch die Vorfreude auf mein erstes Paris-Roubaix als Sportlicher Leiter ist enorm. Die Tage vor Roubaix sind wie die Tage vor Weihnachten für ein kleines Kind.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_06939_6701b0f6c0.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Und jetzt als Sportlicher Leiter?&nbsp;Das kann ich jetzt nach meiner kurzen Zeit als DS noch gar nicht so konkret beantworten. Aber eine Vorliebe für die Klassiker liegt auf der Hand. Ich kenne die Rennen sehr gut, daher kann ich den Fahrern hier sehr viel Wissen mit auf den Weg geben. An welcher Stelle im Rennen muss man in Position sein, wo passieren fast immer Stürze oder an welchem Anstieg kann die entscheidende Attacke gefahren werden. Ich denke noch immer wie ein Rennfahrer, ich weiß wie es sich anfühlt, mit 500 Watt in eine Kopfsteinpflaster-Passage zu fahren. Das hilft mir sehr bei meiner Arbeit hier.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_5222_2_7a6cd7be50.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;&nbsp;Wie haben sich die Klassiker-Rennen in den letzten Jahren verändert?&nbsp;Die Rennen haben sich brutal verändert. Jede Mannschaft hat ein richtiges Klassiker-Team mit extrem starken Fahrern. Die Rennen werden so brutal hart gefahren und verlangen den Profis absolut alles ab. Man muss hier 6 Stunden lang zu 100% konzentriert sein. Früher gab es vor dem Kwaremont einen Sprint für die Positionen, heute ist in der Flandern-Rundfahrt 270km lang Positionskampf. Es gab vielleicht 10 Spezialisten für diese Rennen. Heute hat jede Mannschaft mehrere Klassiker-Fahrer, die am Ende auch um den Sieg fahren können.&nbsp;&nbsp;2009 warst du Zweiter bei der Flandern-Rundfahrt. Wird das Rennen heute anders gefahren?&nbsp;Ab 100km vor dem Ziel ist heute Finale, die großen Jungs fahren unglaubliche Solos. 2009 sind wir noch mit 30 Mann zum Zielstrich in Ninove gekommen. Im Vergleich zu heute war aber auch die Streckenführung damals wesentlich einfacher.&nbsp; Material, Training, Ernährung - da hat sich sehr viel getan seit 2009. Der Sport hat sich verändert, die Rennen werden anders gefahren, die Taktiken haben sich verändert. Da kann ein Sportlicher Leiter, der vor kurzer Zeit noch Profi war, durchaus wertvoll sein. Ich viele Fahrer im Peloton und weiß vielleicht auch, wo deren Schwächen liegen. Der moderne Radsport hat mich gerade erst ausgespuckt und auch wenn ich jetzt am Lenkrad sitze, ich kenne die Dynamiken im Peloton sehr gut. Die Jungs vertrauen mir und meiner Erfahrung. &nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_06934_d0ffa93700.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Emil Herzog ist 19 und am vergangenen Wochenende seine erste Flandern-Rundfahrt gefahren. Wo liegen die Herausforderungen für einen Sportlichen Leiter?&nbsp;Bei Paris-Roubaix musst du flexibel sein. Du brauchst nicht nur einen Plan B. Selbst&nbsp; wenn Plan C nicht klappt, dann brauchst du noch immer Ideen, wie du zurück kommen kannst. Hier kann so viel passieren; nur hier kannst du vermeintlich aussichtslos abgehängt sein und am Ende in Roubaix auf dem Podium stehen. Roubaix benötigt eine akribische Vorbereitung. Die Einteilung der Betreuer auf der Strecke, Strategien zur Verpflegung und zur schnellen Hilfe bei Defekten.&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/AH_06735_5d6d1fd252.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Die Ziellinie im Velodrom von Roubaix ist auch der Schlussstrich für die Kopfsteinpflaster-Klassiker. Wehmütig, dass diese besondere Zeit im Jahr dann schon wieder vorbei ist?&nbsp;Wehmütig ist für mich persönlich fast untertrieben. Wenn man für die Klassiker lebt und so viel Energie und Leidenschaft in diese Zeit steckt, dann ist da nach Roubaix erstmal eine gewisse Leere. Als Rennfahrer hat für mich dann eine neue Saison begonnen. Eine Saison, in der ich bei Rundfahrten für meine Kapitäne arbeiten musste und insgeheim nur von der nächsten Klassiker-Saison geträumt habe. Jetzt als Sportlicher Leiter spüre ich zwar auch diese Wehmut und Leere, freue mich aber auch auf die neuen Herausforderungen in diesem Sommer. Die Klassiker sind mir sehr leicht gefallen als DS, alles fühlt sich so selbstverständlich an. Ich weiß, wie man Rennen in Belgien gewinnen kann. Ich muss aber erst lernen, wie man eine Mannschaft zum Erfolg bei Rundfahrten führen kann. Der Giro wird für mich eine spannende Zeit, da kann ich viel von meinen Kollegen lernen. Das Klassiker-Notizbuch mit Aufzeichnungen zu Streckenabschnitten und Reifendruck bleibt aber in der Tasche - man kann ja nie früh genug beginnen mit der Vorbereitung.&nbsp;&nbsp;Letzte Frage: Leffe oder Kwaremont?&nbsp;Die Stimmung am Kwaremont ist unschlagbar (schmunzelt).Für uns im Hochleistungssport kommt aber sowieso nur die alkoholfreie Variante unseres Partners Krombacher in Frage.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;© Anderl Hartmann

The first 80km of today's stage were relatively calm before becoming hillier. In the middle of the race, the Cat. 1 climb to Urkiola (5.5km / 9.4%) provided the first obstacle. In the finale, there were two final laps with a total of four more climbs before descending slightly towards the finish. With the withdrawal of Primož Roglič, who had to leave the race early as a result of a crash yesterday, the hopes of BORA - hansgrohe rested on Maximilian Schachmann. On the final climb, the German launched an attack, resulting in around only 25 riders remaining at the front of the field. Despite a strong sprint, he was overtaken by Romain Grégoire and Orluis Aular over the last meters. Die ersten 80km der heutigen Etappe verliefen relativ ruhig, ehe es im zweiten Teil dann bergig wurde. &nbsp;Zur Rennmitte mussste der Kat.1-Anstieg nach Urkiola (5,5km / 9,4%) bewältigt werden. Im Finale standen dann noch zwei Zielrunden mit insgesamt vier weiteren Anstiegen an. Nach dem Ausfall von Primož Roglič, der als Folge eines gestrigen Sturzes das Rennen frühzeitig verlassen musste, lagen alle Hoffnungen von BORA - hansgrohe auf Maximilian Schachmann. &nbsp;Am letzten Anstieg lancierte der Deutsche eine Attacke, die dazu führte, dass nur noch rund 25 Fahrer im Feld waren. Trotz eines starken, langen Sprints wurde er erst auf den letzten Metern von Romain Grégoire und Orluis Aular überholt. Mit diesem Ergebnis rückte er auf den zweiten Gesamtrang vor und liegt vor der letzten Etappe nur noch knapp hinter dem Träger des Gelben Trikots, Mattias Skjelmose.&nbsp;<figure class="image"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/sprintcyclingagency_0790742_1_2000px_4d25294fb3.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Reaktionen im Ziel„Die Etappe heute war wirklich schnell und als Team haben wir eine großartige Leistung gezeigt. Aus den Vorjahren wissen wir, dass normalerweise eine Gruppe von 20 bis 30 Fahrern um den Zieleinlauf kämpft, also könnte es Max gut passen. Tour of the Basque Country penultimate stage: Maximilian Schachmann sprints onto the podium

The individual time trial made a return to this year's edition of the race through the Basque Country. In the first part of the 10km long stage, the riders had to take on a steep cobblestone section of almost 10 per cent, followed by an ascent to Olaberria (1.7 km at 5 percent). The parcours then concluded with a short yet steep ramp. BORA - hansgrohe's leader Primož Roglič already posted the best time by the first checkpoint after 4km and managed to extend his lead even further in the second half of the race, despite taking a wrong turn shortly before the finsh. Zum Auftakt der diesjährigen Ausgabe der sechstägigen Rundfahrt im Norden Spaniens stand ein Einzelzeitfahren im Roadbook. Zu Beginn des 10km langen Kurses musste ein zehn Prozent steiles Kopfsteinpflasterstück bewältigt werden, gefolgt von einem Anstieg nach Olaberria (1,7 km, 5 Prozent). Primož Roglič wins thrilling opening time trial at Tour of the Basque Country

De Ronde - it’s the pinnacle of the Belgian Classics season, holy Sunday in Flanders. Gent-Wevelgem (UCI 1.UWT) was the next cobbled classic on the UCI WorldTour race calendar. Tricky wind conditions and countless attacks made for a tough day out at the 253km long race. In the end, M. van der Poel and M. Pedersen crossed the finish line as a duo, with Pedersen securing the victory. Behind them, BORA - hansgrohe provided the perfect lead out for Jordi Meeus, who was ultimately the fastest in the sprint for 3rd place.&nbsp;Result&nbsp;01 M. A lot worked out for us today, the guys rode really smart. We were well positioned before every climb and were able to save some energy.
